Enrollment Increase Equals Dollars

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board continues to save money.

Superintendent of Business Mario Iatonna explains an enrollment increase of 393 students this year is higher than what was anticipated when budget projections were made back in June.

That frees up an extra $4.8-million in the budget -- part of which is extra funding from the government. "That increases our grant revenue, because a lot of our grants are based on student enrollment. And there are expenses related to that because more students means more teachers and more educational assistants," says Iatonna.

The added funding brings the board to a surplus of $1.1-million this year. The overall surplus is $16.4-million. That money is being used to pay off a capital deficit of $15-million. Iatonna says unfortunately the school board can't just pay off its deficit in one fell swoop; it has to be paid off in increments over the next 20 years.
