Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Parish in Windsor may have seen its final service after all.
In a letter to parishioners, London Bishop Ronald Fabbro says a donation of $10-million for repairs of Assumption church "has not materialized." He says without the donation, there are insufficient funds to carry out the needed restoration of the church, which closed its doors this past November.
Fabbro says the Diocese of London undertook a due diligence process after the donation was brought forward by an unknown donor in September. However, he says the diocese "could not proceed further without the due diligence being satisfied."
Mark Adkinson, the communications director for the Diocese of London, declined to comment on the details of the due diligence process.
"Every attempt to raise funds to repair and restore Assumption church has begun with promise, only to fail. This has been personally painful for me, and for all those involved," Fabbro says in the letter. "I believe that we have all done as much as can be asked of us and it is time for us to move forward."
Fabbro says the building, which dates back to 1842, will now be "preserved in its present condition to the extent possible."
