Amherstburg Defers Development Charges

Amherstburg Council is continuing to defer development charges as it tries to attract new investment.

Mayor Aldo DiCarlo calls it a win-win for both sides. "After doing it our numbers did go up," says DiCarlo. "We're deferring them to put the builders in a better financial position to continue more development and then once they've made their money, let's say, they pay us as well."

DiCarlo says it wouldn't be responsible for Amherstburg to completely waive development fees like Leamington has done. "For the municipalities that can afford to do that, I congratulate them," he says.

"The services in the town, especially the extra services that are going to be required from that development, are going to have to come from somewhere," says DiCarlo. "There's only two places to get that money -- it's either going to come from the developers or it's going to come from the taxpayer."

The decision to defer development charges will last one year before it's discussed again.
