Still Labour Troubles In Catholic Schools

While Catholic school teachers have ratified a contract with the province, other professionals at Catholic schools have not.

CUPE Local 1358 represents workers like educational assistants, early childhood educators, and child and youth workers in Catholic schools across Windsor-Essex. Local president Darlene Sawchuk says they've been working without a contract for 13 months now and are carrying out their own work-to-rule campaign.

"Things like participating in Meet the Teacher Night, coming in early or staying late, participating in meetings that take place before or after hours."

Union officials met with provincial negotiators earlier this month and worked out some of the smaller issues, but Sawchuk says bigger issues like staffing problems and job security are outstanding. The two sides are back at the bargaining table Saturday.

"I would like parents to understand that we really, really want to have a quick resolve. We want to be doing the extras," says Sawchuk. "We just want to get back to that."
