Elementary students with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board improved in three of six categories in last year's EQAO tests.
Grade 6 students saw improvements in reading and writing while math scores remained the same with 60% meeting the provincial standard. Reading scores increased to 81% from 79% while writing increased to 82% from 81%.
Board EQAO consultant Heather Best says they are constantly tweaking their approach to teaching math skills.
"It's about making sure that our struggling students are engaged in what they are doing as well and building that confidence," she says.
The board says 73% of Grade 3 students reached the provincial standard in reading last year, an increase of 4%. Both writing and math scores saw minor dips.
The public board did not participate in testing last year due to work-to-rule action.
