Construction on a 450 acre solar farm at Windsor Airport is expected begin soon, and will create more than 100 jobs locally.
The 50 MW Windsor Solar project will require over 100 workers at the site during the construction phase alone. The project will also support the economy with more than $18-million in local investment, including significant funding for community initiatives, a contribution to a community vibrancy fund, and taxes paid to the local municipality.
"This partnership between Windsor Solar, the City of Windsor and Windsor International Airport not only brings a green energy investment to the city, but will generate revenue for the city and create jobs during the installation phase of the project," says Mayor Drew Dilkens in a media release.
The solar farm will utilize Ontario-made solar panels and inverters, and will produce enough clean energy to meet the needs of around 8,500 homes in Ontario each year. This will also help Ontario reach its clean energy goals, offsetting approximately 81,000 tons of CO2 each year, which is the equivalent of taking around 15,000 cars off the road.
The Windsor Solar project is expected to be completed for late 2016 or early 2017.
