Call To Review County-Wide Trails

After five years, LaSalle Deputy Mayor Marc Bondy thinks it's time to review the County-Wide Active Transportation System.

The system is a network of trails for cyclists and pedestrians that will eventually stretch across Essex County.

In a 7-6 vote, Essex County Council reinstated the Municipal Partnership Program for another five years, approved a list of projects for 2016, and green-lighted a paved shoulder program. But Bondy thinks $1.2-million over the next half decade is a lot of money just to rubber stamp.

"I just want to make sure what we're doing is the right way and not come back say 'Oh. We should've. We could've. But we didn't'," says Bondy.

He also has some reservations about continuing paths alongside some roads by paving the shoulders.

"If you're going to put in a bike path, and it's an 80 km/hr road; I know I don't feel safe, and I'm not going to take my grand kids there," he says.

Although council rejected his call for a review, Bondy believes it still may be possible.

"Hopefully, they come back and review with the committees, because it's made up of members of different municipalities," he says. "Even though it was a close vote, I'm just hoping the message was sent."
