Officer Treated After Rescuing Dog

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been treated for hypothermia after rescuing a dog from icy waters.

It happened Monday near the Cedar Creek Bridge off County Road 20 and the Arner Townline in the Town of Essex.  Officers responded to a dog trapped in 3 C water.  One of the officers waded into the creek and retrieved the animal.  Both the officer and dog were then pulled to safety.

The officer, who had been in the water for about two minutes according to the OPP, then began showing signs of hypothermia.  He was treated at the scene by officers and Essex Fire and Rescue, then taken to hospital for treatment.  His injuries are not life-threatening.

The dog, a black Labrador retriever, is expected to fully recover.

The OPP reminds people that thin ice and frigid water can be very dangerous and that people should never head out onto the water in adverse conditions.  Bodies of water that appear to be frozen can look deceiving with thin ice.
