Assisting Refugees With Emotional Distress

University of Windsor Clinical Psychology PhD students are looking out for the mental health of newly-arrived Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

A workshop is being held Wednesday evening, at Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women on Ouellette Ave.

Clinical Psychology Professor Dr. Ben Kuo says many refugees have witnessed violence or experienced trauma, and they haven't had time to really think about what they've been through.

"We want them to, first of all, have some basic understanding of these different kind of reactions they might encounter as they [get settled] in Canada," he explains. "And secondly, how do they cope with these symptoms."

Kuo's students will also be providing information about local mental health resources.

The professor says housing, transportation, and language training are very important for people new to Canada, but helping them deal with emotional difficulties can be equally as important.

Wednesday's workshop is aimed at refugees between the ages of 16 and 20, and starts at 5:30pm.

A similar workshop will be held April 19 for Health Access Day in Windsor.
