The OFSAA Track and Field Championships coming to Windsor in June is getting some financial backing from city council.
Councillors unanimously approved $6,500 in cash and another $3,500 in waived fees for the meet being held at the University of Windsor.
Co-Convener for the event Craig Cavanagh says the support has been tremendous.
"We've never had a road block or a stumble," says Cavanagh. "Everybody's been supportive the whole way across. It's excellent. Couldn't have asked for anything more."
Cavanagh is expecting a strong turnout for the meet.
"We know guaranteed 2,300 athletes for sure and we know over 1,000 coaches and Windsor has been unbelievable in supporting these events, so we're thinking at least a few thousand spectators over the three days," says Cavanagh.
There's still at least one hurdle for organizers to clear — feeding the nearly 400 volunteers.
"We do have chefs and we have the whole cooking structure on site, we just got to make sure we have the supplies," says Cavanagh. "We're working out the cost analysis on that right now."
Organizers say the cash will help cover things like paramedic and policing services needed for the event scheduled for June 2, 3 and 4.
