Windsor Designated Safe Community

The city of Windsor is making a commitment to make the community a safer place and reduce preventable fatalities.

"It's a starting point. It's saying we're committed as a community that from now on and moving forward that any accidental death is not acceptable," says Windsor Police Staff Sergeant Maureen Rudall.

Community partners including all emergency services and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit have completed the process to become a Designated Safe Community by Parachute Canada.

As part of the process they've selected three preventable incidents to focus on based on data provided by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

"Motor vehicle collisions , self harm and falls. And certainly for motor vehicle collisions there's a lot we can do in this community to reduce fatalities," says Rudall.

In Windsor and Essex County self-harm had the highest injury related mortality rate. Self harm emergency department visits were the greatest among youth 15-24 years old however fatalities were the greatest among middle aged adults 40-44 years old. There are about 20 deaths per year in Windsor and Essex County due to collisions and around 50 mortalities due to falls.

Windsor is one of 27 communities in Ontario to receive to Safe Community Designation from Parachute Canada.
