Decision To Replace Late Councillor Pushed

Tecumseh council is going to wait until its July 12 meeting to decide how it will replace the late councillor Mike Rohrer.

Councillors met for their regular meeting on Tuesday night — the first since the 44-year-old's sudden death of a suspected heart attack last month.

Deputy Mayor Joe Bachetti, chairing the meeting in Mayor Gary McNamara's absence as he is away on vacation, says it's important to make the decision with as many councillors at the table as possible.

"I'd like to have that discussion around the council table and will be doing that with members of council, with full debate," says Bachetti.

The incoming councillor has big shoes to fill according to Bachetti.

"He [Rohrer] was a great individual, a team player in terms of around the council table and he will be dearly missed by all of us," says Bachetti. "He was passionate and he represented his constituents with all his heart."

Bachetti opened the council meeting with warm remarks about Rohrer with the late councillor's family in attendance. His photo was framed and sat at his seat on the council table bordered by flowers and a candle.

Options to replace the vacant spot on council include a by-election or a council appointment.
