The Town of LaSalle could take the next step forward in its bid to bring public transit to the town at a meeting Tuesday night.
Since first floating the idea in April, Mayor Ken Antaya says he and CAO Kevin Miller have met informally to talk about using Transit Windsor buses with Windsor's mayor and CAO. Administration from both the town and the city have discussed it, and now Miller's ready to request a proposal from the City of Windsor.
Much of the project hinges still on the costing. The city's plan should include that.
"We're not giving the city a blank cheque, obviously," says Antaya. "We have a pretty good idea at how much it's going to end up costing us."
The route in LaSalle would cover much of the town.
"It's a looped route that's going to take 45 minutes to complete. Starts at St.Clair College and ends at St.Clair College," he says. "It'll pick up the majority of our population, upwards of 80%."
The idea isn't new in LaSalle. Antaya admits it was tried 15 years ago and failed, but he thinks support for public transit has grown since then, especially among students and seniors.
As for when the service could be available, "conservatively I'm saying the first of the year," says Antaya. "Could be sooner. Could be later."
