Report on Condo Conversions Coming

Many Windsor city councillors want to know what impact condo conversions in the city are having on the overall tax rate.

Multiple times a year owner of multi-unit residential apartment buildings come forward to apply for condo conversions that give residents the opportunity to purchase their unit. This also moved the building to a different tax bracket essentially lowering the taxes for the owner of the building.

"It's a continually drain on our resources that are needed to provide services to the public. Not a huge loss but it's a continuing loss," says Councillor Hilary Payne.

Payne says he's not sure if provincial policy allows the city to discourage these conversions.

"Is there a change in provincial legislation required? Is there a change in our own internal policies for collecting taxes? Is there a change needed in tax ratios? There are all of these questions," says Payne.

A report will come back to council outlining the impact of the conversions and what if anything the city can do to discourage them.
