The Alzheimer Society of Windsor-Essex is launching a new program that hopes to encourage more informal interaction with people who may need their services.
Thanks to a $10,000 donation from Caesars Windsor the society will host Memory Cafes once a month for people with dementia, their care givers or anyone wanting more information about the organization.
Manager of Education and Support Programs Rosemary Fiss says they've launched this service based on feedback from their clients.
"Really it's an opportunity for people as a couple or in a family unit to come together and socialize in an informal way," says Fiss.
The Memory Cafes will be held the last Wednesday of the month. The next two will be hosted at the Ojibway Nature Centre on Matchette Rd.
Fiss says you don't have to be a current client of the society to participate in the events.
'If they are maybe wondering about their own memory or they are wondering about who the Alzheimer's Society is, this is an easier way to step in and ask those questions, because it really is just informal," says Fiss.
The Alzheimer's Society will also partner with other community organizations who may have services their clients would be interested in. The Windsor-Fire and Rescue Service was on hand for the first Memory Cafe to offer insight into in home safety.
