Those who knew Dr. Elana Fric-Shamji, or who have been touched by her death, are holding a vigil in her memory at the University of Windsor.
The vigil at the University of Windsor will start at 6pm Thursday between Essex and Dillon Halls. Participants are advised to dress warmly for the event and to bring donations for Hiatus House, a shelter for women who are victims of domestic abuse.
On Friday, there is a visitation at Windsor Chapel on Banwell Rd. from 3pm to 8pm, and a funeral mass at 11am Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 1701 Turner Rd.
Fric-Shamji, who was 40, was born in Windsor and raised in Tecumseh where she attended St. Peter Catholic elementary school and St. Anne High School. Before she was a physician at Scarbourgh Hospital's family practice teaching unit, she was a graduate of the University of Ottawa and Duke University. She was also an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto.
Police in Toronto found her body under an overpass near the West Humber River and believe she was strangled and suffered blunt force trauma.
Her husband Mohammad Shamji, a specialist in spinal surgery, is charged with first-degree murder.
