Drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads as thousands of children head back to school.
The Town of LaSalle reminds motorists speeds are reduced to 30km/hr on roads around many elementary schools including LaSalle Public School, Sacred Heart Elementary, Ecole Monseigneur Agustin Caron, Prince Andrew, Holy Cross and Sandwich West Public School.
Town council made those areas community safety zones back in 2015.
In Windsor, there are reduced speeds around some, but not all elementary schools, but Windsor Police Constable Andrew Drouillard says it is always a good idea to slow down.
"We have sometimes very young children that are just starting school and kids that are just trying to get back into the routine," he says. "You never know if someone is going to dart out into traffic and maybe not cross at an intersection, so you want to be able to break quickly."
But Drouillard says it is not all up to drivers. He says parents and children have a responsibility too.
"Walking on sidewalks and crossing at intersections," he says suggesting some of the topics parents might want to broach with their children. "When you're at those intersections to stop, look, and listen for traffic. Try to make eye contact [with drivers] and make sure they see you."
Drivers are also reminded it is illegal to pass a school bus when its lights are flashing. The first offence carries a fine of between $400 and $2,000 and six demerit points.
"We also often get reports afterwards even of motorists who have done it, and maybe other people have gotten their license [plate number]."
