Two Deaths Attributed To West Nile Virus

Two people in Windsor-Essex have died as a result of the West Nile virus.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit says, while most people never develop symptoms from the virus, less than 1% develop severe neuro-invasive disease.

The health unit says the risk of West Nile continues until the area experiences temperatures below freezing. It is reminding people to remove standing water from their property and take measures to avoid mosquito bites.

No deaths related to the West Nile virus have been reported since 2012.

So far this year, 29 mosquito pools have tested positive for West Nile virus throughout the area and 11 cases of the virus have been reported to the health unit.
