The Ministry of Municipal Affairs hopes to answer the questions of residents who experienced flooding when it holds two information sessions.
The sessions are on Thursday, September 28 at the Caboto Club. The first one starts at 2pm, and the evening session starts at 7pm.
Provincial officials plan to share information about the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians Program. They will talk about what homeowners will qualify and help them fill out applications.
The program was activated after the flood on August 28 and 29 in Windsor, Amherstburg, Essex, Lakeshore LaSalle, and Tecumseh. More than 6,000 homes in Windsor alone flooded.
Municipal officials and Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield have pressed the province to expand eligibility for the program for those who have been denied flood insurance, but so far Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Mauro has rejected the calls.
The program is for clean-up costs, emergency expenses, and to pay for repairing "essential property" like furnaces and hot water heaters. It is not intended for refinishing basements damaged in the flood, and residents who had the sewer backup into their basement are not eligible.
Those who had damage because of overland flooding, sump pump failure, and infiltration flooding can apply for assistance.
The deadline to apply for assistance is January 5, 2018.
