Stifling heat prompts extended heat warning

With temperatures expected in the low 30s and humidity making it feel like it is in the low 40s, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has issued an extended heat warning.

The warning is for Tuesday and Wednesday. The high Tuesday is expected to reach 32 C with a humidex of 42 C. On Wednesday, expect it to feel like 41 C.

Environment Canada, which has also issued a heat warning for Windsor-Essex, says a cold front on Wednesday should cool temperatures down for the rest of the week, but in the meantime, health officials are offering tips to stay cool.

Hydration is especially important to avoid heat-related illnesses, so drinking water is essential. Take a cool bath or shower to lower your body's temperature, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

If you do not have to be outside, stay in an air-conditioned building. If you do not have it in your home, remember public libraries, recreation centres, and malls are open.

Keeping the drapes drawn in your home may also help lower the temperature inside your home.

The very young and the elder are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, although everyone is at risk.

Children and pets should never be left in a parked vehicle.

If you begin to feel dizzy, have a headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness, or confusion, seek medical treatment immediately.
