Charges will not be laid against Windsor police officers after a robbery suspect was bitten by a police dog.
Officers went to a home in the Wyandotte Street and Glengarry Avenue area June 11, 2017 to arrest a 28-year-old man on several outstanding charges, including armed robbery, but he would not come out of the house. They went in and the police dog eventually found him hiding in the attic. The suspect was arrested and taken to the hospital with bites to his neck.
The Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said there are no reasonable grounds to lay charges against an officer in relation to the man's injuries.
SIU Director Tony Loparco said the officer didn't use excessive force by deploying his dog. He also said if the suspect didn't hide from police and if he didn't strike the dog, he would not have been bitten. Loparco adds the dog bites would not have happened if the suspect didn't ignore the officers' orders to come out.
The suspect was wanted for allegedly robbing a pawn shop in Windsor with a sawed-off shotgun.
