SIU sides with police after student injured during arrest

The provincial body that investigates police whenever there is a serious injury is siding with Windsor police officers in the arrest of a high school student who broke his nose.

Special Investigations Unit Director Tony Loparco said the arrest was lawful, and there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against the officers involved.

The police were called to a high school on June 7, 2017, where a student refused to leave the property after he was suspended.

The school called the boy's mother. She tried to convince him to leave but to no avail. Even after police officers arrived, the teen refused to leave.

He was arrested for trespassing, there was a struggle, and the student was hurt.

An x-ray at the emergency room confirmed he had suffered a broken nose in the struggle.

Investigators with the SIU viewed video captured at the school and spoke with four civilian witnesses and five officers to reach their conclusion.
