The long wait is almost over for parishioners at Windsor's Assumption Church.
The church will reopen for Mass Sunday at 11 a.m. with Most Reverand Ronald P. Fabbro and possibly ten priests co-celebrating.
There is still some hoarding over the side altars, and the side pews are roped-off until the plasterwork is complete.
The church has been closed since November 2014 because significant repairs were needed. Numerous failed fundraising efforts stalled restoration efforts, but over the summer a new copper shingle roof was installed on the historic building.
There is still some work to do on the roof around the east and western perimeters and masonry work.
There is still work to do to update the building's HVAC system and remove asbestos. Crews removed contaminated material along with all redundant piping and electrical wiring. That effort should be complete next week according to a release, and then the new hot water heating system can go in. That should be done by early next month.
So far, $2.8 million has been pledged to support the first phase of renovations. Local philanthropist, Al Quesnel has pledged to match donations up to $5 million.
The entire renovation could cost up to $20 million.
From noon until 2:30 p.m. there will be a BBQ celebration on church grounds.
