Members of the Liberal Party of Canada have chosen their candidate for the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh.
Irek Kusmierczyk, who is the current Ward 7 representative on Windsor City Council, was nominated on Tuesday at Windsor's Serbian Centre as the riding's Liberal candidate to run against five other declared candidates in Windsor-Tecumseh.
Kusmierczyk was nominated over Linda McCurdy, a Windsor lawyer and the daughter of Howard McCurdy, one of the first black Canadians to serve in the Canadian House of Commons; and Jeewen Gill, the Liberal nominee for the riding in the 2014 provincial election.
In the upcoming federal election, the newly nominated Liberal candidate will take on the incumbent for Windsor-Tecumseh, the NDP's Cheryl Hardcastle, as well as Giovanni Abati of the Green Party, Daniel Burr of the People's Party of Canada, Laura Chesnik of the Marxist-Leninist Party, and Leo DeMarce of the Conservatives.
Windsor-Tecumseh was the only remaining southwestern Ontario federal riding without a candidate running as a Liberal. Other local Liberal candidates include Sandra Pupatello for Windsor West, Audrey Festeryga in Essex and Katie Omstead in Chatham-Kent-Leamington. The Liberal Party is trying for its second straight majority government in Ottawa.
The federal election is on October 21.
