NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made a stop in Essex Friday morning to announce his plans for universal pharmacare.
He said people should be using their health cards and not their credit cards to pay for prescriptions.
"We're going to put in around $9 billion federally and what we can do, instead of covering just the people in hospital, when we put the buying power of 37 million Canadians together we can cover every single Canadian," said Singh.
Singh said by buying the pharmaceuticals in bulk, it's estimated the government could save $4.2 billion.
If elected, he promises to have the plan in place within one year of the election.
When asked about immigration at the stop, Singh also committed to hiring and training more CBSA officers and other public service agents to protect borders and reduce wait-times.
