Deer cull ends, Point Pelee National Park reopens

Parks Canada will reopen Point Pelee National Park Saturday after shutting it down a few weeks ago for a deer cull.

A release from the agency said, "Parks Canada and the Caldwell First Nation have completed the deer reduction activity in the park as part of the larger, ongoing initiative to improve the health of the forest and savannah ecosystems."

The park closed on January 12 and was expected to remain closed until January 27.

A census of the deer population taken just before Christmas showed 103 deer were living in the park. According to research, the ecosystem at Point Pelee can only sustain a population of 30.

Parks Canada said the population was likely able to get so high because of warm weather last winter and the lack of natural predators like bears and wolves.
