A local project that connects cancer patients with clinical trials is getting a boost thanks to the Play for a Cure hockey tournament.
The project run by Dr. Caroline Hamm was awarded a $40,000 grant to identify barriers to patients finding clinical trials. Hamm said this is an exciting initiative because patients enrolled in clinical trials often have better outcomes.
"This is to help us build software that will help us find the clinical trials for people," said Hamm.
In 2019, the Play for a Cure tournament raised over $284,000 for the Cancer Research Collaboration Fund.
This year's tournament will be held March 26-27 at the Vollmer Complex in LaSalle.
"Our goal last year was $100,000 so we blew it out of the water. I'm hesitant to provide a goal for this year, of course, I want to exceed what we did last year and I'm pretty sure we're going to do it based on the numbers that we have," said Jeff Casey, event director.
The tournament consists of 8 teams of local hockey players who will get the opportunity to play with NHL alumni.
