Police in LaSalle are issuing some reminders to residents after an increase in coyote sightings across the town.
There have been reports recently on both social media and to the LaSalle Police Service regarding coyote sightings.
According to police, none of the recent sightings have indicated any aggressive behaviour toward persons or pets.
"It should be noted that coyotes are entering their breeding season which generally lasts until the end of March when they may start rearing their pups," police said in a media release. "Coyote behaviour during this time may be more bold and protective of their territory."
Anyone who comes across a coyote is reminded to keep a distance from the animal. If you encounter an aggressive coyote police recommend that you:
-Never approach or touch a wild animal
-Do not turn your back or run from a wild animal
-Back away from the animal while remaining calm
-Stand tall, wave your hands, and make lots of noise
-Carry a flashlight at night
Police are also reminding residents not to call 911 unless the animal is posing an immediate threat or danger to public safety. Coyote sightings can be reported to the non-emergency line by calling 519-969-5210.
