WECHU reports 39 new cases of COVID-19

The local medical officer of health is hopeful Windsor-Essex will come out of the current shut-down with even better COVID-19 case counts.

As the latest stay-at-home order comes into effect, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit reported 39 new occurrences in the region.

"We have an opportunity to ride through this stay-at-home order and we can come out strong. If our case rate continues to stay at this lowest level and with additional restrictions it should even come down further," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed. "If we are in a better position we can open up in a much better way with minimum restrictions."

There are now 393 active COVID-19 cases in the community. To date, labs have confirmed 198 infections linked to variants of concern.

Local hospitals are treating 17 patients who have tested positive for the virus. Of those, five are in the intensive care unit.

Vaccine appointments are now available online for residents 60 and older and residents 50 and older in hot spot neighbourhoods identified by the provincial government. For more information or to book an appointment visit wevax.ca.

To date, 95,879 Windsor-Essex residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
