Fire departments across Windsor-Essex will share $123,000 from the Ontario government to help cover extra costs incurred during the pandemic.
Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls announced the financial help on Thursday. The money will enhance fire safety training and support safety inspection programs.
"We need to guarantee our communities are still being protected," said Nicholls. "This investment will enhance fire safety throughout many communities and ensure the technologies and equipment needed to support training and fire inspections are being provided."
Windsor Fire and Rescue Services will get the largest share, $58,100. Essex Fire and Rescue Service expects to receive $9,900. There's $10,300 for Tecumseh Fire and Rescue Services, $10,000 for the fire department in Amherstburg, and $9,900 for Kingsville Fire Department. Another $12,000 is earmarked for LaSalle Fire Services and $13,600 for the Lakeshore Fire Department.
The money is part of a $5-million provincial commitment to respond to the local impacts of COVID-19.
"Our government has listened to fire services across the province and recognizes the impact of COVID-19 has had on their operations," stated Solicitor General Sylvia Jones.
In addition to in-person and online instruction, the funding will pay for critical equipment, like high-speed internet.
