The approval was announced by Minister of Education Stephen Lecce during a virtual news conference on Thursday afternoon.

The Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board awarded the contract to Oscar Construction at a board meeting last month.

“Work on-site has already started, it’s in the very preliminary stages in terms of starting to move some of the earth there, but you are going to be seeing quite a bit of action in the coming days and the coming weeks,” said Board Chair Fulvio Valentinis. “We have a tight deadline, we intend to meet it and the contractor committed to doing it.”

Construction is expected to be wrapped up by September 2022.

The school for 900 secondary students will be built on an 11-acre piece of property between Ouellette Avenue and McDougall Street.

This new school project has been in the works since 2014, when the school board originally planned to build the school on the former Windsor Arena site. The funding for the project was originally approved in 2016.
