The region's Medical Officer of Health has accepted a new position as Ontario's new Associate Medical Officer of Health.
Doctor Wajid Ahmed will leave his post as the Medical Officer of Health at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit on October 1.
The chair of the health unit's board of directors, Gary McNamara, said Ahmed submitted his resignation last week.
Chief Administrative Officer, Nicole Dupuis said the search for a new Medical Officer of Health will begin right away and she hopes to have a new one hired before the end of the year.
In the meantime, Doctor Shanker Nesathurai will become the region's Acting Medical Officer of Health.
Nesathurai got his Medical Degree at McMaster University, where he is now a professor. He received his Master's Degree in Public Health at Harvard Medical School. He was most recently the Medical Officer of Health in Haldimand-Norfolk.
Before Ahmed leaves, Nesathurai will shadow him learning the ropes, but McNamara figured he would be a quick study, saying the Haldimand-Norfolk region has many similarities with Windsor-Essex.
The health unit is also continuing its search for an Acting Medical Officer of Health.
