Active cases continue to rise in Windsor-Essex and Ontario

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex has risen to 350, as the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 59 new cases on Friday.

Of the active cases, 61 involve a variant of concern.

Twenty-three of the new cases resulted from close contact with another person confirmed to have the virus. Public health officials are still investigating 14, and three are outbreak-related.

There are 28 outbreaks of the virus across the region now.

The health unit added another long-term care facility to the list on Thursday. The outbreak at Riverside Place is still under investigation. Two staff members at Village at St. Clair tested positive for the virus, and one employee and one resident at Chartwell Royal Oak have it.

Six schools also have outbreaks; Essex Public School, D.M. Eagle Public School, Leamington District Secondary School, Riverside Secondary School, St. Joseph's Catholic Elementary, and St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary.

The outbreak at the Ouellette Campus at Windsor Regional Hospital is ongoing. There are six workplace outbreaks and 13 in the community.

Ontario reported 793 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday and four new deaths. There are now 5,094 active cases across the province.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
