The death of a man in his 80s from COVID-19 is the 469th fatality in Windsor-Essex since March 2020.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported the death Tuesday morning. The man had lived in the community.
The health unit also added another 38 COVID-19 cases to the total caseload, up to 21,310 now. Of those new infections, the origin of 11 has not yet been determined. Public health officials did trace 15 back to close contact with another confirmed case and seven to community acquisition. One is travel-related, and four are related to an outbreak.
Of the 340 active cases, 19 involve a variant of concern, while 321 do not. There are also 19 people in the hospital with COVID-19.
Seven schools have outbreaks now. Gore Hill Public School and Queen Elizabeth Public School were added to the list on Monday. Outbreaks continue at Leamington District Secondary School, Margaret D. Bennie Public School, D.M. Eagle Public School, and St. Joseph's Catholic Elementary. One at St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School has closed that school until at least Friday.
In the community, there are 15 outbreaks, two at long-term care or retirement homes, seven workplaces and on Medical Unit 4 at the Ouellette Campus at Windsor Regional Hospital.
Over 83 per cent of residents over the age of 12 are now fully vaccinated, and parents can now book appointments for their children aged 5 to 11. The health unit began booking those vaccinations on Monday through its online booking system or over the phone by calling 226-773-2200.
Correction: The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit earlier reported there were outbreaks at eight schools. The number is only seven.
