Local cases number in the triple digits on Thursday

For the first time in months, Windsor-Essex has recorded a daily COVID-19 case count in the triple digits.

There are 109 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit also reported the death of a woman in her 50s from the virus. She's the region's 478th fatality since the start of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 37 people caught the virus through close contact with someone who previously tested positive for COVID-19. Another 35 infections were community-acquired, and how another 35 are under investigation. Travel accounts for three, and two are outbreak-related.

"If we're going to get COVID under control, our best strategy remains vaccinating people who are eligible for the vaccine," said Acting Medical Officer of Health Doctor Shanker Nesathurai.

Nesathurai said of the 42 deaths in local hospitals since August, 30 were unvaccinated.

Twelve people had the shot.

"The people who are vaccinated and dying of COVID, for the most part, are people who have concurrent medical problems," said Nesathurai, who said he inquired about vaccinated deaths from a colleague in intensive care. "These are people who were vaccinated because they're sick. They may have had cancer. They may have had a transplant."

Ontario reported 1,290 new cases on Thursday.  There were another nine deaths, including the woman in Windsor-Essex, and the number of active cases has risen to 8,661.

More to come.
