United Way Windsor Essex says the region's population growth shines a light on the current housing crisis in the region.
The latest census data released by Stats Canada Wednesday shows the region's population grew by 6 per cent but the number of private dwellings only grew by 3.5 per cent.
"We can see how the low private dwelling growth would be putting a strain on housing and could be a contributing factor to the increases in the local housing market, the significant increase in cost," said CEO Lorraine Goddard.
The population trends are the first available data released through the 2021 Census. The remaining results will be released throughout the year.
"When we think about potential provincial and federal investments in the region, we should be in line for opportunities to secure some investments," said Goddard.
The next census results will be released in April and will provide insight into Canada's shifting demographic profile.
