If the City of Windsor moves to create more dog parks, it already has three locations in mind.
In April, Ward 1 Councillor Fred Francis asked the administration to look into expanding the number of dog parks in the city. There are four now at Malden Park in the west end, Remington Park, Optimist Memorial Park and the Ford Test Track Park in central Windsor.
A report to councillors recommends Oakwood Park, Elizabeth Kishkon Park, and Realtor Park may be good candidates if councillors move in that direction.
There are no dog parks now in the east end of the city, so if the councillors want more, it suggests moving ahead first with installing one at Elizabeth Kishkon Park first. It's on Banwell Road near Little River Drive.
Realtor Park in Ward 6 is not far from the dog park at the Ford Test Track in Ward 5.
While dog lovers in South Windsor don't have a dog park to call their own, they are not far from two other existing facilities at Malden Park and Remington Park.
The city would have to consult with the public first. There is a possibility those living nearby may find the increase in noise and traffic disturbing.
There is also a cost involved. Installing a dog park costs between $400,000 and $450,000, depending on the size and amenities, and there is no money in the capital or operating budget for it. Maintaining the location would also cost between $5,000 and $10,000 a year.
