Intending to build over 30,000 new homes in Windsor-Essex by the year 2032, the local home builders association brought together all the area mayors to start on a plan.
Windsor Essex Home Builders Association President Vince Lapico says the private and public sectors need to work together.
"Anything is possible with the right plans and the right people, and that's what we're here to do. We're trying to bring the right people together," said Lapico.
Area mayors promised to work with developers to streamline processes at the municipal level, remove red tape, and ensure infrastructure is in place to support the new developments.
Lapico indicated a good plan is needed to meet the provincial target.
"It's very ambitious. In Windsor and Essex County, I think the best year we ever had was 1,680 houses in one year, so we have to double that essentially for the next ten years," said Lapico. According to provincial set targets, Windsor alone is expected to build over 13,000 homes in 10 years.
"We need the private sector to build it and we need to make sure that we are moving out of their way, doing what's required to protect the environment and building code issues as well, but move out of the way so that they can build the homes that are needed in Ontario," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
