The University of Windsor broke ground on a new 452-bed student residence Monday morning.
The new residence will add to the 1,000 beds the university currently provides to undergraduate and graduate students.
"This is one example of many things that we're engaged in to really support the student experience but it's also an opportunity to provide sustainable, meaningful housing for our students," said President Robert Gordon.
Located on Sunset Avenue between Wyandotte and Union Streets, the $60 million facility is being constructed with a public-private partnership with Tilbury Capital. The facility will include 226 suites with shared student amenities like a cafeteria, laundry facility, and student lounges.
"It's really exciting, everything we've done in designing this building has had student experience at the heart of it," said Michael Kaye, partner at Tilbury Capital.
The building is scheduled to be completed by the fall semester of 2025.
"So many students talk about the residence experience and how it really shapes their university experience and how it means so much to them and it means so much to me to be here to welcome everyone and begin this journey," said Ghallia Hashem, University Windsor Student Alliance president.
