A 53-year-old Windsor man is looking for community support to win a contest for a tatoo that honours his late son.
Dave Postma has a realistic tattoo of his son David skateboarding on his forearm. David was 25 years old when he passed away from Epilepsy.
"It represents a 51-year-old, at the time, loosing their child, getting a tattoo for the first time, going 2,200 kilometers to get that tattoo," said Postma.
The tatoo was done in Miami, Florida by artist German Mondragon. Postma said he called the tattoo parlor the week he had a trip booked hoping they could fit him in, the shop just happened to have a cancellation available.
"It was almost like a spiritual time where David almost intervened to give me this opportunity to get the tattoo. So again, it was very emotional," said Postma.
To Postma, one of the most significant parts of the tattoo is a sign beside him that reads "The sweetest soul you'd ever know." The sign in the photo he brought to the tattoo parlor actually read "No skateboarding" But he says the change really represents who his son was.
"David captured a lot of people in our community, he was very inclusive. he was very giving, he would give his last shirt to someone who said 'hey nice shirt,'" said Postma
The tattoo has been entered into a contest by Inked Magazine. The winner will have a two-page spread feature and take home $20,000.
Right now, Postma is in fourth place in his round. Voting ends Thursday, September 28 with the winner moving on to the finals.
