Windsor police confirm letters about a cyberattack at Caesars are genuine

The company that operates Caesars Windsor has become the latest target of a cyberattack.

Few details have been released, but Windsor police confirmed via X, formerly Twitter, that it had received calls from people who got letters from IDX, Caesars Entertainment's privacy partner, concerning a breach. Police say the letters are legitimate.

"We have received inquiries from residents receiving letters from IDX, on behalf of Caesars Entertainment, regarding a cyber incident," read the tweet from police. "These letters are legitimate and include a dedicated phone number to address questions.

LaSalle police also reported Monday that it had received inquiries.

IDX reported that the problem is the result of a "social engineering attack on an outsourced IT support vendor used by the company."

"Through our investigation, on September 7, we determined that the unauthorized actor acquired, among other data, a copy of our loyalty program database, which includes driver’s license numbers and/or Social Security numbers for a significant number of members in the database," read a statement posted on IDX's official website.

IDX did report that there has been no evidence that anyone's personal information had been compromised.

Neither Windsor police nor LaSalle police are currently involved in an investigation.

As of Monday evening, Caesars Windsor had not responded to a request by WindsorNewsToday.ca for further information.
