Health unit issues warning with low wind chills in forecast

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has warned residents about the dangers of extreme cold.

With Environment Canada issuing an extreme cold warning through at least Wednesday morning, the health unit has provided a warning of its own.

Wind chills could flirt with readings of -30 C, according to the weather agency, and the health unit said that could pose serious health risks.

"Everyone is at risk from cold, especially older adults, infants, and young children, people who work outdoors, people with pre-existing heart conditions or respiratory illnesses, and those who are experiencing homelessness," read a media release from the health unit. "Exposure to cold weather can increase the risk of cold-related injuries including hypothermia and frostbite."

Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, uncoordinated movement, and confusion. People experiencing these conditions should seek medical assistance immediately.

The WECHU has suggested staying sheltered whenever possible, but if you must go outside, take the following precautions.

  • Dress warmly, and in layers. Cover as much exposed skin as possible.

  • If you sweat, remove any outer layers to stay dry.

  • Keep moving to maintain body heat.

  • Drink warm fluids and avoid alcoholic beverages, which can give a false sense of warmth before going outside.

  • Make sure your home heating system is in good working order.

  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle should you become stranded.

  • Check on family members and neighbours.
