Transit services in Amherstburg and LaSalle are getting a financial boost from the Ontario government's gas tax.
A total of $398,778 is its share for 2023-24.
The money can be used to expand service hours, increase routes, buy new buses, and improve accessibility to increase ridership.
Windsor Transit provides transit services in Amherstburg and LaSalle.
"Our government knows that municipal transit systems are essential to the success of our local communities, connecting people and families to jobs, housing, and wherever they need to go," said Essex MPP Anthony Leardi.
This year, 102 municipalities across Ontario will benefit from almost $380-million in gas tax revenue. The Gas Tax Program includes a one-time $3-million payout to municipalities to support transit.
Funding for the program is set by the number of litres of gas sold in the province the year before. Allocations are calculated based on total transit ridership and population.
Last month, the Ford government announced it was maintaining a cut on gas taxes until the end of the year. It collects 5.7 cents a litre on gasoline and 5.3 cents on diesel.
