The Ontario government has cut cheques for Windsor Transit and Tecumseh Transit's share of gas tax revenues.
They can use the funding to increase routes, expand service, buy vehicles, or improve accessibility for those who ride the bus.
Windsor Transit's share for 2023-24 is $4,462,356. For Tecumseh Transit, the amount is $176,470.
This year's Gas Tax Program includes a one-time additional $3-million to support the continued growth of public transit.
"We are appreciative of the generous $4.4-million investment by the provincial government into our transit system," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. "Acknowledging the remarkable growth of the City of Windsor, marked as one of Canada's fastest-growing communities, underscores the necessity for a reliable and interconnected transit network."
Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara was similarly appreciative.
"Investments like this enable the town to continue to provide an affordable means of transportation to ensure access to goods, services, and amenities for residents and visitors," he said.
Earlier this week, transit services in Amherstburg and LaSalle received cheques totalling $398,778.
