The days are numbered for the former Devonshire Sears

It will only be a matter of time before the wrecking ball appears at a former retail landmark in Windsor.

The long-awaited demolition of the former Devonshire Mall Sears store will begin within the next two weeks.

Fencing and concrete barriers have been put up around the former anchor store.

Devonshire Mall General Manager Chris Savard confirmed to WindsorNewsToday.ca in March that the store would be demolished, and new development would come to the space.

"A new mall entrance will be created on the north end of the building and a number of spaces in the northeast quadrant will be re-demised to make way for a new, exciting large format tenant," Savard said. "Talks are progressing nicely for a number of new dramatic and compelling uses for this new site."

The store, which included two full floors of retail, plus basement areas for package pickup, repair, and other services, closed in January 2018 when Sears Canada ended operations.

Since then, the space was used for a pop-up Halloween store, and as a mass vaccination site during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The store was an original anchor of the mall when it opened as a Simpsons-Sears in 1970.
