A building on the University of Windsor's campus is now more welcoming and accessible.
Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk helped university officials show off a new, accessible entrance to the school's Human Kinetics Building on Monday.
The entrance was created using a $722,800 grant from the Employment and Social Development Department of the federal government, via the EnAbling Accessibility Fund (EAF). The application was by U of W's Office of Human Rights, Equity, and Accessibility (OHREA), with assistance from facilities services, the Accessible Built Environment Committee, and faculty in the human kinetics department.
"When you make your spaces accessible for everyone, it communicates that you are welcome here," said U of W OHREA Accessibility Manager Cherie Gagnon. "We were expecting you, and we want you here. It is the first way that we communicate to people that they belong on our campus."
The entrance has a long, gently sloping ramp, resting places with benches, recessed lighting, and a snow-melting system. A new staircase was also added.
The cost of the total project is estimated at $2-million.
