Windsor's crime severity index up

Windsor and Amherstburg's crime severity index increased by 4.8 per cent in 2023.

Statistics Canada's Crime Severity Index report released Thursday shows Canada's crime severity index rose 2 per cent overall.

Locally, the violent CSI rose by 15.5 per cent while non-violent crime increased by 0.6 per cent.

We continue to take a data-driven, evidence-based policing approach to promote public safety and reduce crime,” said Deputy Police Chief Jason Crowley. “This strategy includes adjustments to resource allocation and working collaboratively with community partners to address the underlying issues that drive violent crime, such as mental health, substance use, and homelessness.”

Assaults and robberies were the main drivers in the increase of violent crimes in the city. There were 21 per cent more robberies and 16 per cent more assaults in 2023 compared to 2022. Of all the assaults reported, 45 per cent were related to intimate partner violence.

In the non-violent crime category, fraud and shoplifting crimes were up while occurrences of break and enters were down.
