Enwin Utilities in Windsor is warning its customers after reports of a scam.
"There have been reports of communications falsely claiming to be from Enwin, demanding customer payment or requesting personal information," said a notice on the utility's website. "If you receive a communication that seems suspicious, please do not provide any personal information."
The scams have been online, by phone, and in person.
Remember, before Enwin disconnects service, it will repeatedly send the customer a notice advising of an account with an overdue balance. The utility never calls outside of regular business hours and does not accept cryptocurrency, gift cards, pre-authorized payment through a credit card, or receive payment in the field.
If you get a call from a 1-800 number claiming to be Enwin, it is not the utility. It will only call on its 519-255-2727 number.
It does accept payment through its automated Paymentus system, MoneyGram via Canada Post, through a financial institution, and pre-authorized through a chequing or savings account.
If you receive a suspicious call or think you have been scammed call Windsor Police at 519-258-6111 or Enwin to report the attempt.
