Police recognize success of Offender Management Unit

Windsor and LaSalle police have provided an encouraging update on their joint initiative monitoring people on bail.

Both services contribute to the Offender Management Unit, which tracks people on bail and cracks down on those who violate their conditions.

Since the unit began in March, bail compliance officers have re-arrested 42 offenders on 72 charges.

"We are extremely proud of the work we have done to ensure that individuals comply with judicial release orders and that we hold accountable those who don’t," said Windsor Police Inspector David DeLuca, the head of the unit. "Our team is dedicated to getting these offenders off the streets and continuing to make our community a safe place for everyone."

The 42 arrested so far were initially charged with or convicted of murder, attempted murder, human trafficking, sexual assault, aggravated assault, and firearms offences. Seven of them were on bail for charges involving intimate partner violence (IPV).

The unit is currently monitoring 127 offenders who are out on bail, including 11 individuals who have been charged with IPV-related offences.

The number of offenders who are being monitored via GPS went up from 5 to 25 since March.

The Offender Management Unit is supported by a provincial grant.
