Windsor will get a little greener, thanks to a partnership announced on Monday.
The City announced a partnership with Trees For Life, and the Ontario Association of Cemetery and Funeral Professionals (OACFP), to plant 650 new trees at two parks.
A ceremonial tree was planted at Elizabeth Kishkon Park in the east end. The trees will be planted there and Malden Park on the west end.
Trees For Life Executive Director Mike Hurley said the work will begin as soon as possible.
"Plantings will start this fall," said Hurley. "They'll plant as many as they can, focusing on Elizabeth Kishkon Park, and then moving their focus over to Malden Park likely in the spring of 2025, with the goal of getting at least 650 trees planted between the two spaces."
The City is partnering with Trees For Life for the first time, and it is the third time the charity will team up with the OACFP.
James Chacko, the City's Executive Director of Parks and Facilities, said he is open to any idea that will get new trees planted in Windsor.
"Anytime someone comes to us and says 'We want to partner with you to help plant more trees in parks within the City', we're always very excited, and it's something that's very easy for the rest of the administration to get Council's support on," said Chacko. "These are the types of initiatives that I think are just very easy to move forward with."
Trees For Life is a Canadian charity that has raised over $18-million to support the planting and stewardship of over three million trees nationwide.
